Brad Pitt’s Make It Right foundation in New Orleans breaks new green ground with fourteen duplex designs. Families from the Lower 9th Ward can now choose a duplex in the Make It Right neighborhood.
Fourteen acclaimed architects volunteered their time and creativity to come up with high quality green designs for the residents. Architects include; Atelier Hitoshi Abe, Bild Design, Billes, buildingstudio, BNIM, Constructs, Elemental, Gehry Partners GRAFT, Kappe Architects, MVRDV, Pugh + Scarpa, Waggonner & Ball Architects and William McDonough + Partners.
The design criteria for the duplexes included interchangeable floor plans, integration with the street while still maintaining elevation from possible future flooding, energy efficiency, maximizing shade and sun conditions, connection with outdoor space and affordability.
The new duplex designs will be part of the 150 houses slated to be built in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Building on two of the new duplex designs is expected to start in August 2009.
