Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) has teamed up with Greenpeace to remind Hewlett Packard about their commitment to make their computer products a tad greener.
Earlier this year, HP postponed a 2007 commitment to phase out dangerous substances such as brominated flame retardants (BFR) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic from their computer products (excluding their server and printer lines) from 2009 to 2011.
In an effort to remind them of their ‘corporate responsibilities’ Greenpeace activists climbed on top of HP's global headquarters in Palo Alto California on July 28th and painted (in toxic free paint) the words ‘Hazardous Products’ on the building roof.
To further drive the point home, William Shatner sent a brilliant recorded voice message for all the staff in the building via an automated system:
"This is William Shatner speaking. You, HP, promised me a toxic-free computer by 2009. Now my friends at Greenpeace tell me that I'll have to wait till 2011. What's up with that? Please ask your leader, Mark Hurd, to make computers that are free of toxic PVC plastic and brominated flame retardants just as Apple has done. For more information visit: www.greenpeace.org/electronics. I am William Shatner wishing you an enjoyable day."
