Lost actress Evangeline Lilly has spoken out against overpopulation and the connection to environmental degradation. The Canadian beauty said in a recent interview with CBC News that people have to stop having babies to save the planet. Lily believes that the better alternative to procreation is adoption.

"For a very long time, I have had intentions to adopt. We have a huge population problem on Earth,” explained the actress in the CBC interview. “We're not going to protect the Earth the way we need to protect it if we don't stop making so many babies."

World population is currently at 6.799 billion (as of August 2009) and the planet cannot support and maintain this population at current disproportionate standards of living. Global population is expected to hit 7 billion by 2011 according to the Population Reference Bureau (PRB).

“Even with declining fertility rates in many countries, world population is still growing at a rapid rate,” said Bill Butz, PRB's president. "The increase from 6 billion to 7 billion is likely to take 12 years, as did the increase from 5 billion to 6 billion. Both events are unprecedented in world history."
