E-mail Print

Sigourney Weaver.

Alien-vanquisher Sigourney Weaver has a new monster to tackle – ocean acidification. The eco activist and popular American actress has lent her voice to an environmental documentary called Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification.

The 23-minute documentary, produced by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), explores the under-reported topic of ocean acidification and how the increasingly corrosive ocean chemistry will affect all living species in the seas.

“We are now certain of one awesome fact, the ocean’s power to create life is rivaled by our own power to destroy it,” explains Weaver in Acid Test.

Ocean acidification is happening at an accelerated pace. Over the last 250 years, oceans have absorbed 530 billion tons of CO2, triggering a 30% increase in ocean acidity. The Polar Regions will be the first to experience the more lethal changes. Projections show that the Southern Ocean around Antarctica will actually become corrosive by 2050 according to the NRDC.
