Oscar-winning actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie and her partner actor Brad Pitt recently donated US$2 million (€1.5 million) to the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary in Nambia.

The Jolie-Pitt clan spent the holiday season in Namibia where their first biological daughter Shiloh was born.

The wildlife sanctuary, catering to orphaned and injured wild animals, is situated on 10,000 hectares (24,710 acres) and also houses numerous long-term wild animal residents including leopards, cheetahs and lions.

The Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary offers upper-end accommodation for visitors as well as utilizes the animals in a number of money making ventures including commercials, children’s petting zoos, tourist time with tame cheetahs, safaris, carnivore feeding tours, etc. The money raised is used to fund conservation projects, but it does raise ethical questions about using wild captive animals in conjunction with paid tourism.

Naankuse has released between 30 and 40 large carnivores at its own expense over the past 2 years (one GPS collar= 33K N$). They do not breed in captivity and the animals that are on the Sanctuary that cannot be released are those raised by people as pets or those that are in rehabilitation waiting for release. This Sanctuary puts its money where its mouth is and has to date done its utmost to protect and release wildlife. They believe animals belong in the wild. Sadly some that end up in the sanctuary can never go back to the wild due to the ignorance of people who kept them as pets. Naankuse deserves a lot of credit. Keep up the good work.
