Julia Roberts is the Global Ambassador for The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, promoting the "...public-private initiative to save lives, improve livelihoods, empower women, and combat climate change by creating a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions".
Billions of people prepare their meals using unsafe cooking methods that leads to inhalation of smoke and particles that contribute to lung disease and cancer, mostly for the women and children that prepare and cook the meals. It is estimated that nearly 2 million people a year die from exposure to the toxicity released from inefficient cooking stoves.
As part of the Clinton Global Initiative, The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves partnership involves the United States State Department, the UN Foundation, private companies, NGOs, governments, and international organizations. The aim is to provide 100 million homes with clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.
Each stove costs few dollars to $100 (€71) in developing countries, providing fuel efficiency improvements and emission reductions of up to 40-95%. As the effects of global climate change adds to the stress placed on the world’s forests, improving the efficiency of wood based cooking stoves is a good way to help reduce deforestation.
