World Carfree Day 2009.

September 22nd is World Carfree Day – a global movement to encourage people to imagine life without their cars. Each year communities around the globe – from Calcutta to Toronto, celebrate World Carfree Day with free public transport, street parties, mass bicycle rides and even a few parades. More than 1,000 cities in 40 countries will take part in World Carfree Day 2009.

World Carfree Day, promoted by the World Carfree Network, was started to advance the economic, social and environmental benefits of self-propelled or mass transportation. The organizers want to show ‘…how livable modern cities can be when free from the noise, stress and pollution caused by cars’.

Currently, there are an estimated 600 million personal vehicles driving around on the planet. Each litre of gasoline used by a car produces 2.3kg of carbon dioxide. The Sierra Club USA explains that “…the average car emits about 6.3 tons of CO2 over a year — and the average SUV or pickup emits around 8.2 tons.”

A great idea, but we of course need better solutions to support the awareness. I think increasing traffic can be one of them, which I know might sound bizarre but it’s an idea not often spoken about.

Cheers
