Canada’s eVaro Hybrid

E-mail Print

The eVaro from Future Vehicle Technologies.

Canada-based Future Vehicle Technologies eVaro plug-in electric hybrid, currently a finalist for the prestigious Automotive X-Prize, manages a cool 275mpg (117km/liter) in city driving with a top speed of 135mph (217kph).

The Automotive X-Prize awards US$10 million to the carmaker that creates the best vehicle combining both speed and fuel-efficiency of at least 100mpge (mpg equivalent) or 42.6km/liter, and a CO2 emissions rate of less than 200g/mile (124.3g/km). Purely electric vehicles have to be even more efficient (114mpge/48.6km/liter assuming 100% charging efficiency) based on calculating the equivalent consumption.

Future Vehicle Technologies is offering hybrids with a few sexy twists, a hybrid car that outperforms a gas car – the eVaro accelerates from 0 to 60 (96km/h) in five seconds and manages to look both futuristic and fabulous at the same time.

The three-wheeled eVaro weighs 1,250lbs (567kg) and gets 125miles (201km) driving range on a single charge. Lithium ion batteries are fully charged in a mere three hours with home charging or one hour using the onboard gas engine.

The eVaro’s high-tech gas generator offers extended range, but unlike most hybrids the gas motor does not propel the vehicle but is used to recharge the batteries.
