Porsche’s concept 918 Spyder hybrid sports car was recently unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The Spyder is powered by a 500hp (373kW) V8 and an electric motor mounted on each axle adds another 218hp (160kW) in a parallel-hybrid set-up allowing both engine and motors to drive the wheels.

Acceleration performance is in the super-car league and 0-62mph (0-100kph) comes in a mere 3.2 seconds, with a mind-boggling 198mph (319kph) top speed. The emissions are extremely low for such a performance vehicle, having an equivalent 78 mpg (33.2km/liter) fuel consumption and the Spyder emits only 70g of CO2/km (0.25lb of CO2/mile).

In all-electric drive the Spyder can cover 16 miles (25.8km) without using the gas engine. A hybrid mode switches between gas and electric as needed and a sports mode gives a rear-wheel drive feel. A race mode makes the V-8 and electric motors operate together to give one super hp-endowed sports machine.
