The sewage waste from 70 homes is enough to provide Britain’s Bio-Bug with enough energy to drive 10,000 miles (16,100 kms) a year. The Bio-Bug is run on excrement energy (or poo power) with methane created during the sewage treatment process. In a bid to raise awareness about biogas as a viable and reliable alternative energy source, Bristol-based GENeco, a waste treatment and management company, converted a VW Bug to run on energy generated from the plant’s sewage sludge.
“We decided to power a vehicle on the gas offering a sustainable alternative to using fossil fuels which we so heavily rely on in the UK,” explains Mohammed Saddiq, GENeco’s general manager. “If you were to drive the car you wouldn’t know it was powered by biogas as it performs just like any conventional car. It is probably the most sustainable car around.”
To use biogas as a vehicle fuel without affecting vehicle performance or reliability, the gas is treated via a process called biogas upgrading which involves carbon dioxide being separated from the biogas, as well as removing the corrosive hydrogen sulphide, leaving behind an almost pure methane gas.
