BMW’s Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) four-seater plug-in hybrid is about to hit the streets as a production model. Equipped with a sexy exterior and gull-wing doors, and packing the punch of a sports car, it takes just 4.8 seconds for the 0-100kph (0-62mph) sprint, the VED is sure to appeal to many drivers.

With an average EU test cycle fuel consumption of just 3.76liters/100kms, equal to 75.1mpg imp (62.5mpg US), and CO2 emissions of 99grams/km (0.35lb/mile), BMW’s VED is a frugal fuel consumer and low polluter. The VED is powered by a 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine with a hybrid synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle giving a total output of 241kW/328bhp.
The lithium-polymer rechargeable battery is housed centrally in a longitudinal chassis element and can be fully charged at a conventional power socket within just two and half hours. The use of electrical energy alone permits zero-emissions motoring for 50km (31miles), while a 24-litre diesel tank extends the total range to 700km (435miles) before a refill is needed.
