When we see pictures of these adorable Peel microcars, built in on the Isle of Man in the 60s, we have to ask ourselves why did cars become some enormous and grotesque?

These adorable rides were created to accommodate one or two people, and were designed by Cyril Cannell and George Gelling, from Peel Engineering. They were the ultimate solution to urban driving, with minimum environmental impact.

Today, believe it or not, the Peel P50 has the distinction of still being the world’s smallest production car – so small in fact that it can fit in the back of most North American SUVs.

With the two car types built in very limited numbers, the 54-inch (1.37m) P50 and the two seater Trident are collector’s items that we would definitely like to see put back in to production but with a modern efficient engine or all-electric drive.
