Vehicle designs are rapidly changing in the pursuit of efficiency, non-fossil fuel energy sources and appearance. The Aptera 2e is no exception, or maybe it is. This super sleek, aerodynamically designed electric vehicle is poised to take the eco-world by storm and, unlike other vehicles that are merely concept cars, they are ready to be bought, driven and cherished.
Inspired by natural elements that embrace the environment and designed to slip through the wind rather than fight it, the Aptera 2e is graceful in motion and quite a beauty to behold. Typically most vehicles waste more than 50% of their energy pushing wind out of the way. With a low drag coefficient of 0.15, the Aperta 2e has less drag than Lance Armstrong on a ten-speed.
Combined with a lightweight composite structure that incidentally can support the weight of two elephants, aluminium energy absorbing zones and multiple air-bags, the Aptera 2e is designed to look after its driver and passenger as you zoom silently down the HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lane, past all those stationary gas guzzlers.
Power for 100 miles of driving range comes from overnight charging and at a cost around $0.50, so it doesn’t empty your wallet and you never have to visit a gas station again.
Engineered with a three-point stance, the vehicle is stable and agile. The gullwing doors wing open up allowing for easy manoeuvrability in tight spaces. The vehicle’s climate control system is moderated through the solar cells on the roof, which helps save electrical energy for driving rather than air conditioning.
The interior features recycled fabric with natural dyes and the seats and carpets are made out of old recycled plastic bottles and cups.
A full charge takes about 8 hours on a standard 110v socket.
Prices vary from $US20,000 to $40,000 depending on options and powertrain.
No figures released yet on top speeds, but rumour has it that it will be as fast as it looks.
