The Portable Solar Coffee Maker is the perfect off the grid solution for java junkies. Created by Two Hand Design student group from the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design as part of an industrial design course, the Solar Coffee Maker is named Girasol or sunflower in Spanish.
The Portable Solar Coffeemaker makes two cups of coffee per hour. The system uses vacuum-tube technology to generate and insulate heat from the sun.
Here’s how it works - sunlight passes through the clear outer wall and strikes the black textured surface of the inner wall, the inner wall heats up and the heat is then transferred from the inner wall to the water contained in the base. Once the water is at the appropriate temperature, estimated to be about an hour under ideal conditions, invert the Girasol and the hot water drains through the aluminum filter containing coffee grounds and into the glass serving vessel. Unscrew the filter and enjoy a cup of solar powered off the grid coffee.
The Solar Coffee Maker is designed for disassembly and easy recycling – the unit is made from glass and aluminum.
