William Head Prison on Vancouver Island, Canada may be generating its own green energy in the near future. The prison, located on a blustery waterfront 90-acre property, is exploring wind energy generating options with the installation of a 36-metre meteorological tower.

The meteorological tower will collect data for one year to gather information on wind speeds, wind direction and air temperature. The data will be analyzed by Natural Resources Canada to ascertain the viability of installing wind turbines at the prison.

The progressive Minimum Security Prison is also renowned for its theatre program –William Head On Stage. Each year the prisoners put on a stage show open to the public. Past productions have included One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Waiting For Godot, and The Firebugs.
