In developing countries the simple act of doing laundry is a major effort, explains DesignAffairs Studio of the genesis behind their new project The Swirl.
The Swirl: Easy Laundry on the Go is a rolling, off the grid, washing machine that uses kinetic energy of movement to wash clothes. The concept machine addresses problems associated with doing laundry in developing countries including the difficulty in transporting heavy laundry to and from a communal water source.
The Swirl Overview: The design resembles a ball containing a swirled sphere shaped basket and lid, connected to a steel tube handle. Clothes washing is accomplished by rolling the “washing ball” while traveling to and from the water source. The user can also wash clothes by just rolling it back and forth in slow rotation cycles. It can also be used to transport water home after the clothes washing is finished.
