X Prize Oil Spill Competition?

The X Prize Foundation recently announced the possibility of an oil spill X Prize at the TEDxOilS oil spill conference. Previous prizes include research on gene mapping, spaceflight, and high-efficiency transport vehicles.

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill has generated thousands of suggestions to deal with the spill and the leaking well. Foundation VP Francis Beland announced the possibility of a competition, but also asked for input on how the competition should be run. One possible solution is that the prize could be split into two different X Prizes, one to deal with spilled oil and another to cap leaking wells.

Previous X Prizes have been around $10 million (€8.2M), and the X Prize Foundation has received grants to pursue other environmental clean-up competitions.
