New Energy Technologies has announced the world’s first glass window prototype capable of generating electricity using miniature organic solar cells developed by Dr. Xiaomei Jiang at the University of South Florida. The SolarWindow design does away with metal contacts that obscure vision through the glass. The solar cell generates ten times the electricity as conventional thin-film cells using both natural and artificial light such as office and home lighting, outperforming monocrystalline silicon cells twofold.
The miniature solar cell, only a quarter the size of a rice grain in diameter, uses multiple layers of organic conducting polymers. Each solar cell array has twenty of these environmentally friendly hydrogen-carbon derived solar cells, and are one thousandth the thickness of a human hair.
