Coffee grinds, copper strips, salt water and aluminium coffee canisters are the ingredients in the Nespresso Batteries from Austrian designers Mischer’Traxler (Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler).

The innovative artistic duo created 700 coffee batteries that powered clocks in a window art installation during Vienna Design Week. Located at the Nespresso Austria offices, the entire coffee powered installation creates enough energy to run a small radio. Each battery provides roughly 1.5 – 1.7 volts produced by the tiny chemical reaction between the coffee can, coffee-grounds, copper and salt water. The coffee used in the installation represents the average coffee consumption of one person for a year.

“Invisible energy becomes visual via ticking sweep hands and thus shows the importance of collecting and recycling the valuable material aluminium,” explains the artist. “The installation wants to encourage customers to bring their used Nespresso Capsules back to the boutiques and other collection facilities, in order to be recycled.”
