FocusDesigns have just launched their SBU (Self Balancing Unicycle) version 2.0, a revolutionary gyro stabilized, battery powered, and environmentally clean “green” vehicle.
Learning to ride one takes only 20 minutes according to the company. You lean forward to go faster and backwards to slow-down and stop. Leaning left and right makes the SBU change direction. The SBU balance comes from advanced electronic control of the wheel motor, using accelerometers and gyroscopes with sophisticated balancing software. Low foot pegs, coupled with a low centre of gravity help with stability.

Power comes from a 1000W hub mounted motor, giving a top speed of 10mph (16kph) with a second or two from a zero start. You can cover 1mile (1.6km) in around 6 minutes and 20 seconds, not exactly a world record but faster than a good marathon runner.
Included in the motor design is regenerative braking to help charge the battery and extend the range. Energy is stored in the LiFePO4 lithium-ion nano-phosphate battery, providing a 12mile (19.3km) range. Charging requires a 100-240V, 2A supply, and takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery (38.4V), which is good for a 1000 charge cycles.
The price of the SBU v2.0 is around US$1499 (€1072).
