Solar Serpent in Paradise by Mans Tham.

Swedish architect Mans Tham has created a Solar Serpent in Paradise design to generate 150MWh of GHG-free solar photovoltaic power on  LA freeways.

Tham’s design provides 237 acres (960,000sq.m) of photovoltaic solar cells built along 14.9miles (24kms) of freeway and assuming a 131ft (40m) width, the design provides 150MWh of power in the local distribution grid, with electric plug in charging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles along its length.

The solar cell coverage also reduces road noise and the design includes a CO2 capture device that pumps the gas through algae ponds, to help make bio-fuel. Increased shaded areas will reduce the temperature on the road, reducing the need for vehicle air conditioning, and road surface UV exposure is reduced, lowering wear and tear on the road surface.

As LA County has 500miles (800kms) of freeway, and an abundant sun resource, it seems like a good idea to take advantage of all that space and potential sun power.
