Got a cool idea that can make the world a better more sustainable place? Ideas don’t have to be grandiose (although those are also welcome), but they do need to promote and provide green energy. The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy are seeking entries from inspirational and innovative sustainable energy projects around the world. There are 15 awards to be won (eight in the UK and seven international awards), and entry is free. Winners receive between £30,000 to £40,000 (approx. US$52,700 to US$69,000).

For international candidates, the Ashden Awards are looking for local sustainable energy projects based in countries with developing economies. Past winners have used various technologies to benefit local communities and achieve carbon savings. Past projects have achieved energy savings through fuel-efficient stoves, micro-hydro plants, biogas plants, solar energy systems and water pumps. October 21, 2008 is the deadline for the international expression of interest forms to be submitted.

For UK residents, the Ashden Awards is seeking projects run by local authorities, businesses, charities and community organizations (including Energy Agencies). Eligible projects should involve the delivery of sustainable energy at a local level and scale. Sustainable energy covers both renewable energy supply (electricity or heat) and the reduction of energy demand. Winners in these four categories will receive £30,000 each in prize money for project development, with a second prize of £15,000. October 23, 2008 is the deadline for the UK expressions of interest forms to be submitted.

The 10 previous Ashden Award-winning 2008 projects reached nine million people and saved 1.9 million tons of carbon emissions – equivalent to the total domestic emissions of more than 700,000 UK citizens.
