No matter what coal industry lobbyists are trying to tell you, there is nothing good about the current inefficient and polluting system of using coal-fired power plants. Sierra Club explains, “…coal-fired power plants and the pollution they release every day are a major threat to human health and our environment”. To help people get the real coal hard facts, Sierra Club has launched a new website called Coal Is Not The Answer.
At their site they debunk the common coal myths put forward by industry lobbyists including; coal is not cheap, clean nor abundant, and it is not a replacement for oil. Coal-fired power plants emit almost 40% of the United States annual carbon dioxide emissions and burning coal also emits mercury. In fact, coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of human made mercury pollution in the USA.
Sierra Club explains that, “...the coal industry has spent over $40 million on misleading advertising that touts coal as the next great thing to solve the energy crisis. It’s time for a reality check. We will not stand by idly as they spew their propaganda”.
There are more than 150 coal plants slated for development in the USA over the next few years reports the Sierra Club.
