A bizarre new website is currently promoting the virtues of ‘clean’ coal via singing Clean Coal Christmas Carolers. The Coal Carolers’ video includes the option of dressing the coal lumps in seasonal attire, choosing the appropriate background and picking the Christmas carol the lumps sing. A coal lobbyist group calling themselves America's Power is behind the campaign.
The coal lumps bastardize holiday favourites - Frosty The Coalman, Clean Coal Night, O’Technology, Deck The Halls With Clean Coal and Jingle Bells – all in aid of promoting coal usage.
The campaign might be successful if the target audience is young children, but most adults would be hard pressed to understand why such a silly strategy is being used to promote coal usage in America.
Currently, coal usage accounts for half of the electricity used in the U.S. Most environmental organizations are opposed to the continuing use of coal as a major source of electricity. Sierra Club explains, “…coal-fired power plants and the pollution they release every day are a major threat to human health and our environment.”
Editor's Note: The singing coal lumps have been removed from the website, but can still be viewed on YouTube:
