China’s Largest Solar Station

E-mail Print

China is planning to build one of the world’s largest on-grid solar power stations, eventually supplying more than 1GW of solar power (more than most nuclear power plants). The China Technology Development Group Corporation (CTDC), a provider of solar energy products and solutions in China, is focusing on using Silicon thin film technology, and recently announced that, in conjunction with the Qinghai New Energy Group Co., Ltd. (QNE), they have signed an agreement with the government of Qinghai Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Region, to build a 30MW on-grid solar power station in the Qaidam Basin in northwestern China.

The first phase of the Qaidam Solar Power Station will produce up to 30MW and the total long-term objective of the project up to 1GW. The Qaidam solar power station, the first of its kind in China to integrate crystalline silicon and thin-film solar modules, will be the largest on-grid solar power station in China after full completion. CTDC and QNE will begin construction of the project in 2009 with an initial investment of US$150 million.

With ample sunshine, vast desert landmass and broad power grids, Qaidam Basin, is generally regarded as one of the optimal locations in China to build a large-scale on-grid solar power plant. In 2005, the Chinese government approved to establish Qinghai’s Qaidam as a special economic experimental zone to develop the economy and renewable energy projects.

“The ambitious plan to build such as large scale solar power plant is a significant step for Qinghai Province to develop and deploy solar energy by taking full advantage of our abundance of solar energy and desert resources of Qaidam Basin,” commented by Mr. Luo Yulin, Vice Governor of Qinhas Province and Mayor of Xining. “It also reflects the commitment by our government to meet the challenges posed by climate change with reliable and renewable energy.”
