The Soil Clock & Soil Lamp

E-mail Print

Is soil the new source of energy? Well maybe. Dutch designer Marieke Staps has created two innovative designs that run on soil or mud power – the Soil Clock and Soil Lamp. Both designs work on the principle of an earth battery – where the copper and zinc are the electrodes but the soil actually forms the electrolyte – the conductive medium for the charge to flow.

The Soil Clock

The free and environmentally friendly energy used in the Soil Clock is sustainable and forever renewable as the clock runs on mud. The metabolism of biological life produces enough electricity to make the clock continue working. To operate the clock, stick the copper and zinc wires into two plants. Water the plants occasionally to ensure the clock keeps working.

The Soil Lamp

The Soil Lamp also runs on sustainable energy from mud. The metabolism of biological life in the mud produces enough renewable electricity to keep the small LED lamp burning. The mud is enclosed in various cells that contain copper and zinc to conduct the electricity. The only thing that the lamp needs is a splash of water every now and then to keep it operating.
