“There is no evidence that CO2 is a pollutant. In fact, higher CO2 levels than we have today would help the earth’s ecosystems. We all need CO2.” These are the word’s of an oil lobbyist backed TV commercial and newspaper advertisement campaign telling Americans that they should contact their Congress members to rethink if CO2 should be classified as a pollutant.
The Guardian UK is reporting that the advertisements are an attempt by a former oil industry executive backed organization to undermine the recent ruling of the US Environmental Protection Agency to classify CO2 as a pollutant and may also be an attempt to derail the forthcoming vote in the Senate on the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill.
The pro-CO2 campaign is the creation of two organizations — CO2 Is Green and Plants Need CO2. Both organizations are backed by oil lobbyists and have applied for charitable status in the USA.
“Our mission is to educate the public on the positive effects of additional atmospheric CO2 and help prevent the inadvertent negative impact to human, plant and animal life if we reduce CO2,” explains the organizations.
