The world’s highest cabinet meeting took place December 4th, 2009 at the 17,200ft (5,240m) Gorak Shep, near Mount Everest’s base camp, as Nepalese ministers endorsed a resolution on climate change.
Wearing oxygen masks and heavy coats, Nepal’s Prime Minister and 21 cabinet members held a 20-minute meeting in the thin frigid mountain air to raise awareness about the importance of a fair and binding agreement in Copenhagen. The ministers’ sat before banners reading ‘Save The Himalayas’ as images of the Mount Everest cabinet meeting were beamed around the globe.
"The Everest declaration was a message to the world to minimize the negative impact of climate change on Mount Everest and other Himalayan mountains," explained Prime Minister Madhav Kumar during the press conference.” Due to global climate change and its effects, the entire human civilization is faced with additional challenges for their survival."
The world’s highest cabinet meeting comes just one month after Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed and his ministers held the world’s first underwater cabinet meeting as part of the international movement to draw global attention to the pressing issue of climate change.
