With the Canadian conservative government ignoring global warming and refusing to ratify the Kyoto accord, environmentalists are getting increasingly innovative in working to mitigate climate change with or without government input. Canadians are installing solar panels, purchasing hybrid cars, running their cars on recycled vegetable oils, utilizing rain catchment systems, building green houses and offices, and purchasing offsets to live carbon neutral lifestyles.
However, even though little changes add up to big changes, governments need to get behind greenhouse gas emission reduction programs as soon as possible. Several activists on Vancouver Island are using performance art to raise awareness about how little the Canadian government is doing about climate change. Dressed in red caps, with yellow vests and molecule masks, the CO2ies are traveling around Canada to raise awareness about the negative effects of global warming. The CO2ies have chapters in Victoria, Nova Scotia and Ontario.
