The Lone Climate Ranger

Never underestimate the power of one. A lone climate change activist scaled the £12m defences of the most heavily guarded power station in Britain, stopped the 500MW power turbines and wrote ‘No New Coal’, reported the Guardian UK. The action took place on November 28th.

The Lone Climate Change Ranger was able to stop all power from the coal and oil-powered Kingsnorth Station for an estimated four hours. The Guardian UK reports that because of the climate change action, the UK climate change emissions were reduced by 2% while it was out of action. So far, no organizations or individuals have taken credit for the action.

The protest may be related to plans to replace the existing coal-powered Kingsnorth Station with a new coal-powered plant. If EON (the company that owns the Kingsnorth Station) builds a new coal powered plant, it will be the first new plant built in Britain for over 20 years.

The plans to build a new power plant have been extremely contentious with numerous protests, blockages outside the EON offices, protest camps, and activists attempting to scale the fence around the power plant. The organization No New Coal reports that the new power plant at Kingsnorth will release more CO2 each year than the whole of Ghana and will not use carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
