On the famous Isle of Man TT Circuit this June 12th, 2009, the world’s first Clean Emission Carbon Free Time Trial (TT) Grand Prix will be held.
The purpose is to showcase green motorcycling technology and to encourage further research and development.The Isle of Man TT course is 37.7 miles (60.7 km) in length and runs along a number of public roads. It is an exciting motorcycle racing circuit with over 200 corners about 60 of which have been given names to show their racing significance. The circuit also runs from sea level up to Hailwood's Rise at an altitude of 422 meters (1,384 feet).
Kicking off the race will be a symphonic pop and rock concert on the 11th June, played by the 70 piece London Metropolitan Orchestra accompanied by a rock band, and 3D special effects projection.
Up to the 9th of April, there were 24 confirmed entrants, sixteen teams and seven different countries represented including the UK, Isle of Man, Italy, USA, India, Germany and Austria.
Mavizen is the original TTXGP promoters and they will be showing off their TTXO1 Suzuki-R750 based electric motorcycle that will be available next year with possibly two wheel drive, and a planned 0-60mph (96kph) in less than 3 seconds.
One of the recent entrants is the electric motorcycle called Mission One, made by US manufacturer Mission Motors. It has a 150mph (240kph) top speed and a range of 150miles (240kms).
Another entrant is EVO Design Solutions, who will race 3 bikes in two different classes. Their EV-0 RR bike is also electric with 0-60mph (0-96kph) in 4 seconds, top speed of 150mph (240kph) and a 20,000 UK pound (US$29,300) price tag.
In another racing class is the second US entry, called Inertia and manufactured by Brammo. It has a 50mph (80kph) top speed, 35-45mile (56-72kph) range and a CO2 emission of only 21.8g/km versus 140g/km for an average motorcycle while a Toyota Prius emits 130g/km.
Other competitors include the US companies MotoCzysz and Barefoot Motors, with some UK universities and colleges competing, including Brunel University, Kingston University and Imperial College London.
Top riders competing include Isle of Man TT seven-times winner Mick Grant, Olie Linsdell who is the lap record holder, Paul Owen who is a PlayStation2 TT Superbikes Real Road Racing Championship star and Maria Costello who is the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest female lap of the TT Circuit.
