Human Powered Monorail

E-mail Print

The world’s first Human-Powered Monorail System – the Shweeb – allows you the opportunity to pedal around a curvy 200m (219 yard) overhead rail track in an aerodynamic capsule that travels up to 45kph (28mph). Did we mention it has zero emissions?

altAlthough originally invented by New Zealand’s Geoffrey Barnett as a solution to alleviate traffic jams in urban areas, currently the Shweeb is being used as a pedal-powered eco-amusement park ride at extreme fun park Agroventures Adventure Park in Rotorua, New Zealand.

alt“It hit me when I was living in Tokyo that there is a lot of people in a small space and a lot of traffic jams. It seemed like a natural idea to consider cycling over the top of all of it,” explained Barnett of his original idea.

Hopefully the Shweeb will one day be used as more than a cool eco-amusement park ride, until then the Shweeb is a great way to have some carbon neutral fun.

Nice idea, but certainly not 'the world’s first Human-Powered Monorail System'. There has been a human powered cycle monorail at Pleasure Island Theme Park, Cleethorpes, in the UK for years! I remember it being there 14 years ago and I'm sure it wasn't new then. This is however a far more beautifully designed version.
