The world’s only plane-boat (a boat made from an airplane) started its life as Howard Hughes' private Boeing 307 Stratoliner. Purchased in 1969 for $70, the plane originally dubbed the Londonaire was up-cycled into a seaworthy vessel minus the wings and tail. Today, several owners and a lot of interesting history later, the Cosmic Muffin is used as a charter boat hosting parties, galas and fundraisers as it cruises around American waterways.
The Cosmic Muffin is an example of creative recycling at its best.
“Unfortunately, most retired aircraft are completely cut up, but many are built with quality materials and engineering. This one aircraft had the rare gift of a second life as a boat…,” explains current owner Dave Drimmer.
The Cosmic Muffin is primarily used on protected waterways, but can also travel on the ocean in calm conditions. The twin Yamaha 50hp 4-stroke high-thrust outboards propel the plane-boat at up to 13 knots.
The original cockpit is still in place and the same controls that were used to fly the plane are now used to steer the boat.
The Cosmic Muffin is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
