Pee Before You Fly

ANA/Wikipedia.

Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) has taken an innovative approach to lowering their carbon emissions – by telling passengers to pee before they get on the plane. The airline has installed special attendants at the gates to remind passengers to use the toilet before boarding.

Airline officials have implemented the ‘empty bladder campaign’ to reduce passenger weight and subsequent greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in an estimated five-ton reduction in emissions per month.

Currently only in a four week trial phase, ANA will evaluate the green policy for effectiveness and customer response before implementing it as a regular part of their air service. The trial eco-policy went into effect on October 1, 2009.
