Shocking Polar Bear Ad

E-mail Print

Polar bears falling from the sky and ending up in bloody, bone-crunching heaps is the shocking visuals for a new online and cinema advertisement campaign by Plane Stupid, a European airline pollution advocacy group.

The campaign is an effort to make people aware that airline flights have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and polar ice caps melting. The campaign includes the message that "An average European flight produces 400 kg of greenhouse gases per passenger.” 400kg is the average weight of a female polar bear.

According to the Guardian UK, the advertisements, created in conjunction with Mother advertising agency, were created with the intent to shock.

"We wanted to confront people with the impact that short-haul flights have on the climate," explained Robert Saville, art director at Mother, in a Guardian interview. "We used polar bears because they are a well understood symbol of the effect that climate change is having on the natural world."
