Kolelinia is a design concept for urban bicycle lanes in the sky. Created by Bulgarian architect Martin Angelov, the innovative design, although not for those with any fear of heights, offers steel wire bicycle lanes, plus safety harnesses, located high above the traffic.
Recently presented at Sofia’s TEDx Conference, the carefully engineered system is more than a pie in the sky design concept (pardon the pun), but offers a realistic alternative to traditional on the ground bicycle lanes in urban areas. A few details still need to be worked out though, like how to enter/exit the sky bicycle lanes and how to overtake fellow cyclists, but overall it is an ingenious design concept.
