Inflatable Surfboard

The SurfAir by Thomas de Lussac.

Amateur surfboarders can now take an inflatable surfboard to the beach with them, thanks to French designer Thomas de Lussac. The SurfAir takes only two minutes to inflate with its own pump, comes with a repair kit, T-shirt and travel bag. The board itself is approximately 210cm x 55cm x 7 cm (83inch x 22inch x3inch) and weighs in at 4.8kg (10.6lbs).

Lussac used a three-dimensional fabric coated in two PVC layers to make the surfboard shape, and looks really quite rigid when inflated. SurfAir can be conveniently rolled up and stored in a bag, inflated at the beach, cleaned off, deflated and repacked for the homeward journey.

SurfAir is available from Lussac’s website for €490 (US$663)

As a surfer of 20+ years and a Sustainable Design graduate, this is an interesting concept. Its no greener than a normal surfboard - its still made of petro-chemicals and lots of plastic. It also would be made in a factory - not by a local surfboard maker - a dying art/industry due to mass market demands. It might save fuel in that you could take it on the bus, or on a moped, but really its green credentials are lacking. Given I'm looking at a board hanging on my wall that's 30+years old, I can't see a long life for it either, what inflatable does have a long lifespan?
DREAM idea of many surfers though, and it looks pretty rigid, but really, a total failure and not green!
