Taiyou is a solar cell powered gondola from Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius, a Swedish industrial design student at Lund University. The Taiyou lift concept design uses solar cells to run along fixed wires. Batteries inside each gondola store enough energy to complete the gondola ride when there is not adequate sunlight.
Each gondola has two seats with safety belts. The floor under the seats can slide back and forth to compensate for the tilt of the lift when it's going up or down the mountain.
Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius explains that by using self-propelled solar gondolas the system can operate with very few gondolas and subsequently will have equally low energy consumption. Standard lift systems often require a lot of gondolas to be energy efficient.
