Brazilian-based Solar Ear has come up with an innovative design for affordable solar powered hearing aids. The Solar Ear utilizes two rechargeable AA batteries that are charged via Solar Ear’s solar power battery and hearing aid recharger.
The batteries are fully charged within six to eight hours, providing the hearing aid user with an estimated week of hearing time before the unit needs to be recharged. The batteries can be recharged up to 300 times, providing several years of battery use compared with traditional hearing aid batteries which require weekly battery changes.

“600 million people have a hearing impairment, but only about 8 million have hearing aids. The primary reason is cost,” explains Jaymi Heimbuch from Planet Green.
The US$100 (€70) Solar Ear promises to be a welcome and more affordable addition to poorer parts of the world.
