Flu season is definitely no fun and if you are caught unawares – it can be even more unpleasant. Alternative remedies are great for flu and it is easy to go the natural way when treating minor seasonal flu symptoms.
There are a range of vitamins, minerals and herbs that help boost your immune system and fight general flu symptoms including Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Echinacea and Zinc. Oil of oregano is also a good overall immune booster, but it is not for the faint of heart.
Basic homeopathy flu remedies that everyone should keep in their alternative medicine cabinet include Nux Vomica, Aconitum Napellus, Arsenicum Album, Oscillococcinum and Rhus Toxicodendron. However, with homeopathy it is the overall compilation of symptoms that are taken into consideration to find the appropriate remedy. Consider consulting with a naturopath or homeopath to find the remedy best suited to your particular set of symptoms.
For coughs and congested chests, drops of Echinacea and Goldenseal extract taken internally may provide some relief. Rubbing organic peppermint, spearmint or eucalyptus oil on the chest can also help alleviate chest congestion. However, since pure essential oils can be quite strong, always use with an organic carrier oil to minimize skin sensitivities.
For headaches and migraines associated with flu, consider using organic essential oils applied to the back of the neck or temples. Mix with an organic carrier oil if you have sensitive skin and avoid contact with your eyes. Both organic peppermint oil and lavender oil can provide relief from discomfort associated with headaches. Lavender oil on a cold cloth is also helpful for cooling the forehead when fever is present.
Tiger balm and/or Arnica oil are also possible options to apply to the temples and back of the neck when headache or migraine symptoms are severe, again avoid contact with your eyes. Remember to reduce exposure to bright lights, strong odours and loud noises when headaches are intense.
For nausea and vomiting, consider sipping organic ginger tea, peppermint or Echinacea tea. The addition of a little organic honey can be extremely soothing for sore throats.
Filtered water with added trace minerals or electrolytes will help to keep you hydrated when flu symptoms are at their worst. If you feel you need something carbonated then reach for bubbly water as opposed to sugary sodas.
Often a primarily liquid diet can be helpful to flush the body of toxins; consider eating simple veggie broth and/or carrot and ginger soups. Homemade soups made with fresh organic vegetables are the best option to reduce exposure to additives and pesticides and minimize the body’s toxic load.
Fresh organic juices are also great when you are recovering from the flu. A soothing flu juice favorite is carrot, beet, apple and ginger. Celery, parsley and cucumber can also be added for an extra green boost. Although fresh juices may not directly alleviate flu symptoms, they do help rehydrate after a vigorous flu. Garlic and ginger are both considered strong immune system enhancers that help with flu symptoms.
