Canada has become the first country in the world to legally declare that bisphenol A (BPA) is a toxic substance, with particular risk to fetuses and babies. Unfortunately, BPA remains widely used in processed foods and beverages.

BPA mimics estrogen hormones in the body and Health Canada had previously banned its use in polycarbonate plastic baby bottles and baby food packaging in 2008. However, the American Chemistry Council opposed the ruling which resulted in a delay in Canada making the ban law. Now, under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, it is defined as being a banned substance that does harm to the body, including possibly causing prostate and breast cancer.
