A woman with a double leg amputation has been transformed into a living mermaid via technology developed by New Zealand-based Weta designers. The five time Oscar winning, and Peter Jackson co-owned entertainment company, put their amazing talents to use to create this fully functional mermaid tail for Auckland resident Nadya Vessey.

The custom-made tail, created to allow Vessy to travel through the water with undulating mermaid-like movements, was realized via a combination of 3D modelling and milling technology. The exterior of the tail is a layer of neoprene and has a lycra outer-layer printed with a gorgeous ‘scale' pattern.
Vessey is an avid swimmer and plans to use her new tail in the swimming portion of competitive triathlons.
