Green Inauguration Gowns

Environmentalists around the world are hoping that soon to be First Lady Michelle Obama, and other high profile attendees, will wear eco-dresses to the inauguration ceremony.

There are a lot of eco-designers out there, but our favorite is Jamie Kuli McIntosh from Twisted Textiles. Jamie takes industrial and household waste such as plastic, pet food bags, and discarded water bottles and turns everyday trash into wearable art and wondrous sculpture. Fabrics — especially the unconventional ones —  are her favorite medium.

“The clothes that we wear are a type of sculpture or even architecture. But they have become necessarily dumbed down in order for us to perform our daily activities. I am interested in questioning social expectations about clothing,” she explains.

Jamie has two elegant evening eco-gowns to choose from for the inauguration.

The Plastic Ball Gown is made from reclaimed protective film from squares of Plexiglas salvaged from a prosthetics' studio.

The Dryer Sheet Dress is a sheer and feminine evening dress made from recycled clothing dryer sheets. The Dryer Sheet Dress would set a good eco-example and send a strong green message that the Obamas are going to give up their energy wasteful clothes dryer and start hanging their laundry out on the line.

“Most people don't consider secondary uses for the things they throw away every day, like plastic containers, broken tools, or even old clothes. But we can do something with our refuse besides bury it in dumps and forget about how it toxifies our environment," explains Jamie. “I rescue a lot of junk, and it all has to be cleaned up and dismantled in some way to begin its transformation. Usually, the form that these objects take makes them unrecognizable as they become part of something new." Like evening wear that would make wonderful green inauguration gowns.
