Sexy Recycled Shoes

E-mail Print

Who says recycling can’t be sexy? Thai designer and president of Stripnotize Shoes, Christa Gruenwald has turned reuse and recycle into a sexy shoe empire. Although not originally intended as a green project, Gruenwald created her customized platform shoe line because it simply made sense to reuse existing material.

We caught up with Christa to ask her a few questions about her customized shoes. Such as, are they difficult to walk in?

Please describe your Stripnotize platform shoes.

Our Stripnotize line are industry standard shoes with a twist. They are custom designed to meet the specifications and desires of our clients.

Where did the idea come from?

I just woke up one day and decided to decoupage a pair of my own old shoes to give them a well-needed makeover. Quickly realizing the infinite design possibilities, it turned into a business. I hadn't really even thought of the environmental angle. The fact that we use recycled materials just makes sense.

How are the shoes created?

We use all kinds of different materials — books, magazines, gift-wrap, costume jewelry etc.

Where do you get the shoes?

They are manufactured in a factory in order to meet entertainment industry standards. Safety first!

How long does it take to make a pair?

About one week.

Do you use only recycled materials?

No, not exclusively. I use whatever I can find, Swarovski crystals for example.

How much does a pair cost?

They start at $59 for the shoes and $40 and up for the design service depending on the materials used. The average price is $99.

Who wears/orders the shoes?

Anyone and everybody — dancers, models, entertainers, brides-to-be, athletes, men (for their wives or for themselves), women of all ages.

Are they hard to walk/dance in?

LOL, that's a relative question depending on who you ask. The actual incline is not steeper than the average high heel shoe, but it's the platform part that can prove a bit tricky. But, practice makes perfect.
