Amazon Sandals has recycled more than 800,000 discarded tires into funky, affordable footwear.
Each year, an estimated 20 million tires are discarded in Brazil. The tires mostly end up in landfill, lakes and rivers, typically taking hundreds of years to decompose. Only 20% of the tires discarded are currently recycled in Brazil.
Enter Amazon Sandals. This innovative green company, based in Rio de Janeiro, recycles thousands of discarded old tires each year into good-looking and very green flip flops.
The shoes are made by first gathering discarded tries, then cutting them into chips, and the rubber chips are then processed into powder and purified. The powder is ground to the required granulation and then treated to devulcanize the rubber. The resulting material is then formed in presses to create the sandals' soles, explains the company.
The result is an eco-shoe that is comfortable, anti-allergenic, easy on the planet and will last longer than a traditional flip-flop.
