Each year more than an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. As it takes more than 1000 years for one plastic bag to break down in the landfill, and due to extremely low recycling or reclamation rates, almost every piece of plastic ever made is still in existence today.
Anita Ahuja, president of Conserve, has come up with an innovative way of dealing with the plague of plastic bags in Delhi, India. Conserve, a cutting edge eco-enterprise, takes mountains of plastic bags that would otherwise end up in landfills and upcycles them into a stunning range of handbags and purses.

Famed Indian photographer Prashant Panjiar recently captured a day in the life of Conserve, following workers from the garbage pick-up to plastic bag cleaning and sorting, and through to the production of the stylish Conserve handbags. He has generously allowed us to publish a sampling of his Conserve Photo Story images.
