Captain Electric is an innovative line of stylish clothing that converts kinetic energy from the human body into electric energy and stores it within power cells integrated into the garments. The Captain Electric Itchy, Sticky, and Stiff futuristic-looking collaborative collection features stylish clothing that uses kinetic energy to power LED lights and built-in stereo systems.
The three energy-generating garments include:
Itchy’s tailored leather silhouette, decorated with large reconfigurable wool necklaces. The layering of necklaces, evocative of bulky wool turtlenecks, uses the ‘itchiness factor’ so that the user grasps them and moves them back and forth on the body, generating energy which in turn powers LED necklaces to softly illuminate the face.
Sticky is a hooded leather dress designed to impede natural body movement, with the sleeves of the dress tethered to hard shells on the chest and hips, forcing the body to move in pronounced and powerful motions. These movements generate energy to fuel a series of LEDs integrated into the pockets.
The Stiff outfit, using the posture caused by muscular stiffness as inspiration, harvests energy created from movements or pressure on the back of the outfit. The energy then activates an mp3 player integrated into the hood.
“Reflecting fashion’s historic relationship between discomfort and style, the dresses restrict and reshape the body in order to produce sufficient energy to fuel themselves and actuate light and sound events on the body,” explain the artists of their work. “Rather than attempting to conceal the generators and their operation, we chose to overtly integrate them into the garment concept and design.”
