An inflatable bicycle helmet is the focus of a new innovation from Swedish designers Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin. Created as a university thesis project, the Hövding is a collar that inflates into a head protecting airbag upon impact. Incorporated into a stylish outfit, the Hövding features a helium cartridge, various motion and movement-detecting accelerometers and a computer chip that records 10 seconds of sensor data.
The Hövding seems like a good option for bicycle riders who refuse to wear traditional plastic or metal helmets.
Thankfully, due to the sensors and computer chip, the Hövding is able to differentiate between someone reaching down to pick something up of the floor and falling off your bike, and has been proven in extensive testing with crash test dummies.
