I think we all remember the days of brown organic underwear and sack-like hemp dresses. The underwear looked like it had been marinated in Grandma’s herbal tea, the scratchy dresses fit like a circus tent and came in three muddy colors. Being a hippie chick definitely meant compromising style for the cause. Well, organic clothing and environmentally friendly fashion has come along way since the 1960s.
Now everyone from Bono to Natalie Portman to Stella McCartney are offering hip organic clothing or stylish vegan fashions. And have you checked out the eco-lingerie of late? These sumptuous bamboo panties and peek-a-boo soy bras are enough to make any man or woman’s (hippie or redneck) blood boil. And now you can buy everything from elegant and environmentally-friendly wedding gowns, to sustainable and sexy plus size fashions.
But where can you find these fabulous natural fashions? Most towns might have one or two natural clothing shops to choose from. If you want to access the wide array of eco-clothing options, you need to go online and visit Eco Fashion World - the brainchild of a global team of eco-fashionistas who are determined to make natural fashion hip, sexy and accessible to the masses.
Eco Fashion World doesn’t sell anything but rather aims to inspire you with new ideas, ideals and information. Our goal is to keep you green, gorgeous and growing with daily news, a monthly magazine and a comprehensive guide to all the beautiful eco-fashion labels available.
We checked in with Eco Fashion World editor, Eva Anastasiu, to ask a few questions about natural fashion… and where we can get some of those sexy panties like in the photos.
Why did you start Eco Fashion World?
We started Eco Fashion World because we found that there was a lack of a fun, sexy, info portal dedicated exclusively to eco-fashion that doesn’t sell anything. Eco-fashion is hot, it needed its own glossy online mag, and a well built site to help people actually find the stuff.
How did the site come to be?
Aaron, the original founder of the site, came to the Ethical Fashion Show (EFS) in Paris last year to look for partners who might be interested in joining him on this journey. I was volunteering at EFS for the second year and met him, and our other partner Kim, while doing live translations for them during the conferences. Our fourth partner, Erda, is a longtime friend of Aaron's. With the four of us on three different continents, we started working on the concept together through Skype and email.
Why do we need a site like Eco Fashion?
The purpose is to inspire and entertain with fun articles and beautiful fashion that has the advantage of being ethical. And we make it easy for people to find these gorgeous green creations, wherever they are.
Who is the site targeted towards?
Broadly the site is targeted towards anyone who is interested in making more conscious fashion choices. It's targeted to women who enjoy being fashionable and trendy. We also aim to attract women who might not be looking for eco-fashion normally but are willing to give it a try because our site presents it in a sexy glossy format that is appealing and girly.
What is eco-fashion?
There are several criteria we use to define eco-fashion; the first and most important is ethical labor practices, whether it's fair trade or locally made in good conditions, respect for the workers who make our garments is key. Then one or more of the following: recycled, repurposed or organic materials, cruelty free products (leather free alternatives for shoes, bags, etc), handmade or vintage. The most creative designers use several of these techniques to craft gorgeous and original pieces with the least environmental impact.
Who buys eco-clothing? Is the site just for hippies?
Natalie Portman buys eco-clothing, so yes, it's for sexy, trendy hippies and all the followers who desperately want to look as good as them.
Does the site feature more of those ugly hemp dresses from the 60s?
We don't do ugly! What about some sexy hemp-silk skivvies that wouldn't look out of place on Dita Von Teese: http://www.enamore.co.uk or maybe you'd prefer some want-to-be innocent but oh-so-hot side tie organic cotton panties by http://www.greenknickers.org
What does modern eco-clothing look like?
There is as much variety in eco-clothing today as there is in non-eco-clothing. You can find everything from your sophisticated American sportswear, like John Patrick Organic to cutting-edge European designers like Noir or Fin. You can be a trendy urban chick in your Prairie Underground jeans leggings (my current obsession du jour), Beyond Skin lowboots, super soft Stewart and Brown knits and Ecoist bag. There's even a Hip Hop hemp brand www.thtc.co.uk, a luscious plus size label http://www.dianekennedy.ca/ and some truly avant-guard designs from Adrea Crews or SANS.
How has environmentally-friendly fashion changed over the years?
I think eco-clothing had an image that was not very appealing for the fashion conscious consumer and it's gradually moved to the opposite end of the spectrum where eco-designers are now amongst the most interesting and innovative out there, not only in terms of design but also with regards to the materials they use.
What kind of clothing choices does your site feature?
Our site is always looking to showcase the latest and greatest developments in eco-fashion, and give women lots of options for looking their best no matter what their style. Just like a regular glossy fashion mag, we feel the pulse of eco-fashion and bring our readers the best that it has to offer.
What other groovy features does Eco Fashion World offer?
Aside from our magazine and news articles, our international guide of fashion designers and stores is searchable alphabetically but also by eco-criteria and with a "fashion finder" (with one click, you can find the designers who make the clothes you need whether it's underwear, evening wear or wedding gowns). Our education section also has lots of useful info for people who want to find out about schools, organizations, books and other resources where they can further their eco-fashion knowledge.
