Sixteen recycled plastic bottles is what it takes to make a pair of these funky sneakers. Running shoe manufacturer New Balance has created an innovative and low impact sneaker made almost entirely from recycled plastic bottles (Eco-fi).

Dubbed newSKY, the running shoe is constructed from more than 95% recycled plastic with the interior lined with a fleecy material created from recycled PET. The Eco-fi materials are created using flaked bottles, which are heated and mixed with a fibre that is then used to construct the shoe. As an extra bonus, the shoes, when exposed to the heat of the wearer, form to fit the feet.

Although not biodegradable, the shoes can be recycled when they wear out and you are ready for a new pair. The company wants you to return the worn-out shoes so they can continue to be part of the recycling loop. This applies not just to newSKY, as New Balance will accept any gently worn shoes that you are ready to part with.
